چکیده

Underwater disposal of mine tailings in lakes and seas has been considered favorable due to the geochemical stability obtained during long-term storage anoxic sediments. Sulfides are stable ore; however, oxidation transformation some substances into more soluble forms may impact bioavailability processes enhance risk toxic effects aquatic environment. The goal this work was construct a model for simulating nickel (Ni) cycle water column upper sediments apply it tailing sea deposit Jøssingfjord, SouthWest Norway. A one-dimensional (1D) benthic–pelagic coupled biogeochemical model, BROM, supplemented with Ni module specifically developed study used. optimized using field data collected from fjord. predicted that current high concentrations sediment can be potential source leaching until about 2040. top 10 cm were classified as being “poor” environmental state according Norwegian Quality Standards. numerical experiment complete cessation discharges there would an improvement “good” 20 years. On other hand, doubling discharge lead increase content sediment, approaching boundary “very poor” state. results demonstrated deposits increased reworking by bioturbation at sediment–water interface. instrument analysis different scenarios activities point view reduction component best available technology.

Modeling the emission, transport and deposition of contaminated dust from a mine tailing site.

Mining operations are potential sources of airborne particulate metal and metalloid contaminants through both direct smelter emissions and wind erosion of mine tailings. The warmer, drier conditions predicted for the Southwestern US by climate models may make contaminated atmospheric dust and aerosols increasingly important, due to potential deleterious effects on human health and ecology. Dust...

Bioaccessibility of arsenic in mine waste-contaminated soils: a case study from an abandoned arsenic mine in SW England (UK).

This study characterises the total As concentrations and As bioaccessibility in 109 soils from Devon Great Consols Mine, an abandoned Cu-As mine in Devon, SW England, UK and discusses the soil and mineralogical factors that influence the bioaccessibility of this element. These data provide the basis for developing more accurate exposure estimates for use in human health risk assessments. The me...

Investigation on Health Effects of an Abandoned Metal Mine

To investigate potential health risks associated with exposure to metals from an abandoned metal mine, the authors studied people living near an abandoned mine (n=102) and control groups (n=149). Levels of cadmium, copper, arsenic, lead, and zinc were measured in the air, soil, drinking water, and agricultural products. To assess individual exposure, biomarkers of each metal in blood and urine ...

Measurement of Genotoxic Endpoints in Earthworms Exposed to Radioactive Wastes from an Abandoned Uranium Mine

The main objective of this study was to assess the sensitivity of genotoxic endpoints, to be considered in earthworm’s reproduction assays, performed under the evaluation of soils contaminated with radioactive wastes. Earthworms were exposed, under laboratorial conditions, to a contaminated soil from the Cunha Baixa uranium mine and to LUFA 2.2 soil (control soil). Earthworms (Eisenia andrei Bo...
